Isle of Berk Mod Taming System, Controls and Dragon Commands

The mod runs every dragon through one shared control system. Learn it once with a Terrible Terror and it carries straight over to a Skrill. The whole scheme rests on three inputs: a stick in your hand, the primary ability key and the secondary ability key.

The stick as a universal tool

A plain wooden stick is the interface for almost everything the mod does with dragons, which is an unusually elegant design choice for a mod this size.

Reading taming progress

Right-click a wild dragon with a stick and the game reports how close you are to taming it. This removes the guesswork that plagues most taming mods, where you feed items blindly and hope.

Cycling behaviour modes

On a tamed dragon, the same right-click cycles three states. Sitting keeps it parked where you left it. Following makes it trail you on foot and in the air. Wandering lets it roam a local area on its own.

Why follow mode matters in flight

If a dragon is set to follow while you are riding it, dismounting in midair means it dives to catch you. Set it to sit before you jump off and you will find out how much fall damage the mod expects you to survive.

Taming mechanics across species

The loop is consistent even though the requirements are not.

Food is the base currency

Fish drives taming and breeding across the roster. Salmon, cod and tropical fish are the reliable items to carry.

Conditions layer on top

Some dragons add a requirement. A status effect, an empty armour setup, or a specific life stage for species that only accept taming as juveniles. These conditions are what separate a tier one dragon from a tier five one.

Mood states you can read

Wild dragons shift between curious and wary. Approaching a curious dragon builds progress. Pressing a wary one loses it. The visual tells are deliberate, and learning them is worth more than any item you could bring.

Creative mode shortcuts

In creative, right-clicking a dragon tames it outright, and right-clicking an egg hatches it immediately. Useful for testing an install or building a showcase world, less useful if you want the mod's actual progression.

Riding and combat

Once a dragon is saddled, it becomes a genuine vehicle rather than a pet that follows you around.

Mounting and the saddle

A tamed dragon accepts a saddle in the same interaction slot as a horse. Saddling also unlocks the dragon's own inventory, which travels with it.

The primary ability key

Bound to R by default, this is the breath attack. Fire for most species, plasma for the Night Fury, an electrical discharge for the Skrill, and a gas-and-ignite pairing for the Zippleback.

The secondary ability key

Bound to X by default. This is where species differentiate most sharply — the Deadly Nadder launches tail spines, the Triple Stryke applies venom, and several species use it as a mobility burst instead of an attack.

Rebinding the keys

Both keys appear in the standard Minecraft controls menu under the mod's own category. If you run a large modpack, check for conflicts before your first flight rather than during a fight.

Managing a flock

Most players end up with several dragons, and that introduces its own problems.

Keep them separated by mode

Set everything you are not actively using to sit. A stack of dragons in follow mode is a performance problem and a pathfinding mess.

Use the inventory for long trips

Each saddled dragon carries its own storage. Treat your main mount as a mobile chest for exploration runs.

Watch entity load

These are large, fully animated entities. A dozen of them in one chunk will cost you frames even on strong hardware, which is worth remembering before you build a stable.

Commands worth knowing

For testing, screenshots or server administration, a few commands save a lot of time.

Summoning a specific dragon

The entities are namespaced under the mod ID, so a summon command takes the form /summon isleofberk:dragonname ~ ~ ~ at your position.

Forcing a colour variant

Appending a variant tag to the summon command lets you pick the exact colour roll instead of waiting for a rare spawn. This is the standard way players document variant catalogues.

Clearing a nest

Nest sites keep repopulating, which surprises players who clear one and expect it to stay empty. Removing the spawn structure rather than the mobs is the durable fix.
