Terrible Terror
Pocket-sized, travels in groups and perches on your shoulder once tamed. The natural first catch.
A fan-made Minecraft Forge mod, documented independently
Twelve tameable dragons from the How to Train Your Dragon universe, built for Minecraft Forge 1.18.2. This is the independent record of how the mod works, what it needs to run, and where the project went after it was discontinued.
Isle of Berk is a fan-made Minecraft mod that drops the How to Train Your Dragon universe into a Java world. It was written by a small team of fans of the films, series, games and books, and it leans on the GeckoLib animation library so that every dragon moves, fights and flies with its own character rather than sharing a single skeleton.
What separates it from most mob mods is that earning a dragon is a process. You cannot right-click a Night Fury and walk away with it. You prepare, you approach on the mob's terms, and the mod tells you how close you are through a deliberately simple interface — a wooden stick. That restraint is why the mod is still being installed years after the last release.
The project is no longer maintained. The files remain freely available and the 1.18.2 build works exactly as it always did, but every fix and every newer Minecraft version now comes from the community continuations documented further down this page.

Tier is shorthand for difficulty: how hostile a dragon is on sight, how specific its taming condition is, and how much preparation a realistic attempt takes.
Pocket-sized, travels in groups and perches on your shoulder once tamed. The natural first catch.
Slow in the air, extremely durable on the ground. A forgiving first flying mount with a molten breath attack.
Quick and agile, with a tail-spine volley on its secondary ability. Common enough to find early.
Two heads working as a pair: one lays gas, the other ignites it. Wide model, awkward in tight terrain.
Hostile on sight and able to set itself alight. One of the strongest all-round combat mounts once tamed.
Flightless pack hunter led by an alpha. Devastating on open ground and the mod's real ambush threat.
Pulled from the HTTYD live show rather than the films. A large, aggressive flyer and the usual last stop before the night-flying species.
Lightning breath, cold-biome spawns and immediate hostility. Its rare variants are the most hunted in the mod.
Three tail stingers and a venom secondary. A duelist rather than a crowd-clearer.
Shares the Night Fury speed profile with its own approach rules. Half of the hybrid breeding pair.
Night vision on, armour off, hands empty. The fastest flyer and the hardest tame in the roster.
Hybrid offspring rather than a wild spawn. The end goal of a working Night Fury and Light Fury pair.
Six mechanics that carry across the whole roster, from the first Terrible Terror to the last Night Fury.
A plain wooden stick reports how close you are to taming a wild dragon, and on a tamed one it cycles sitting, following and wandering. Learn it on a Terrible Terror and it works identically on a Skrill.
Salmon, cod and tropical fish drive both taming and breeding across the entire roster. Carry a stack rather than a handful, because the counter climbs per successful feed.
Tier five dragons add requirements on top: an active status effect, no armour in any slot, empty hands, or a life stage the dragon has to be in. That is the whole difference between tier one and tier five.
A curious dragon holds its ground and watches you. A wary one shifts posture and bolts if you press. Stop the moment the posture changes and let it settle before moving again.
The primary ability key fires the breath attack — fire, plasma or an electrical discharge depending on the dragon. The secondary key triggers what makes that species distinct, and both are rebindable.
Two tamed adults, a fenced pen and fish give you an egg on a cooldown. Stay in the chunk while it hatches. Nightlights only come from a Night Fury and Light Fury pair, which makes them the real end goal.
The order matters. Forge first, one launch to build the folders, then the library, then the mod.
Download the Forge installer for 1.18.2 from its official page, run it in client mode, and let it write a new profile into your Minecraft directory.
Start the game from the new profile and close it again at the title screen. That first run creates the folder structure the mod needs.
Place the 1.18.2 Forge build of GeckoLib into the mods folder. This is a hard dependency — the game will not start without it.
Copy the mod file into the same folder as a plain .jar. Do not unzip it, rename it or nest it inside a subfolder; Forge only scans the top level.
Relaunch, open the Mods list on the title screen, and confirm both entries appear with a version string. Then make a creative test world before touching your survival save.
What the mod needs from your setup, and what changed after the final release.
Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 on Minecraft Forge. Fabric will not load it and neither will 1.19 or later. Bedrock, console and mobile cannot run Forge mods at all.
Every dragon animates through it, and Forge refuses to start without the matching 1.18.2 Forge build. A Fabric build of the library fails exactly like having no library.
Twelve large animated mobs cost more than vanilla ones. Two gigabytes of allocated memory is the practical floor, four is comfortable, and a shader pack on top needs more than that.
The mod is self-contained and loads beside most Forge content. The exceptions are mods that rewrite mob AI, entity rendering or animation, and terrain packs that replace the biomes its spawn rules depend on.
The 1.18.2 build installs and runs exactly as documented. Interest in Isle of Berk Mod 2026 keeps climbing, mostly from players arriving through the films and the modpacks rather than the original release window.
Want the authentic build? Take the original and accept the version lock. Want a current Minecraft version? Take a maintained port. The alternatives guide compares every continuation in detail.
The original stopped at 1.18.2. Three different kinds of project picked it up from there.
The main continuation carries all twelve species to newer Minecraft versions with most of the code rewritten and the sound assets cleaned up. It adds an in-game Book of Dragons that documents every species and taming method, and replaces the stick with a dragon staff that can warp a dragon to you.
A themed modpack adds dungeons, archipelago terrain and Viking gear so the dragons have somewhere to belong. You trade performance and control for a curated playthrough.
Expansion packs widen the species roster beyond the base twelve. They are written against a specific base version, so mixing one with the wrong build is the fastest route to an unexplainable crash.
Almost every support report traces to one of four causes, and checking them in order is faster than reading a crash log line by line.
Missing or mismatched GeckoLib, in that order of likelihood. After that, a wrong Minecraft version or a Java runtime older than 17.
Forge never saw the file. Confirm the jar sits directly in the mods folder and that you launched the Forge profile rather than a vanilla one.
Biome mismatch, a terrain mod replacing the vanilla biome set, or an existing world where only newly generated chunks carry the mod's spawns.
A corrupted download, a resource pack overriding the mod's assets, or a GeckoLib version that loaded but does not match.
A small group can run the mod comfortably on modest hardware if the setup decisions are made before anyone joins.
Identical builds of the mod, GeckoLib and Forge across every player. Distributing one zipped mods folder removes an entire category of support question.
Four gigabytes is a realistic floor for a handful of players. Single-thread CPU performance matters more than core count, because entity ticking is not parallel.
Lower simulation distance, pre-generate terrain before people start exploring, cap flock sizes socially, and restart on a schedule. Back up the world folder before every mod change, without exceptions.
Ten things people ask before and after installing the mod.
No. The original project was discontinued by its creator and is frozen at Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge. The download files remain available, but no further fixes or version bumps are coming to that build. Active development now happens in community ports that were built with the original team's permission.
Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 with Minecraft Forge. It will not load on Fabric, and it will not load on 1.19 or later. Bedrock, console and mobile editions cannot run Forge mods at all, so there is no version of this mod for those platforms.
Yes — GeckoLib is a hard requirement. Every dragon in the mod is animated through it, and Forge refuses to start without the matching 1.18.2 build present in your mods folder alongside the mod jar.
Twelve species, drawn from the films, the series and the games. Most of them also roll a colour variant when they spawn, so the visual roster is considerably larger than twelve even though the mechanical one is not.
It checks your state continuously rather than once. You need an active night vision effect, no armour in any slot, and nothing weapon-shaped in either hand. Re-equipping a helmet or swapping to a tool mid-approach breaks the sequence.
The stick is the mod's universal control item. Right-clicking a wild dragon with it reports your taming progress, and right-clicking a tamed one cycles it between sitting, following and wandering.
The primary ability — usually the breath attack — is bound to R by default. The secondary, species-specific ability is bound to X. Both can be rebound in the standard Minecraft controls menu.
Yes. Install Forge in server mode, place both the mod and GeckoLib in the server's mods folder, and make sure every client runs identical versions of all three. Keep simulation distance modest, because animated dragons are heavy entities.
Usually biome or chunk related. Species are tied to specific biomes, terrain-generation mods can replace those biomes entirely, and adding the mod to an existing world only affects newly generated chunks. Travel into fresh terrain before assuming it is broken.
No. It is a fan-made Minecraft mod inspired by the franchise, built by independent developers. This site documents it independently and has no affiliation with Mojang Studios, DreamWorks Animation or the original mod team.
